In an April 5 game against George Washington, Bonnies senior catcher B.J. Salerno took a foul ball to his throwing hand, breaking his knuckle and theoretically ending his career. With that foul ball, the Bonnies (21-17, 7-11) lost 164 career starts, 132 hits and 65 RBI.
After a stunning semifinal marathon upset over top-seeded George Washington, the men's tennis team settled for second place at the Atlantic 10 Championship in Monroeville, Pa., falling in the finals to No. 2 Xavier, 4-0, Sunday. The clock has struck zero, the final out recorded. After a long, yet highly enjoyable, semester, my time as sports editor of The Bona Venture has come to an end. And while I sit back and feel a little relieved, it will take time to believe this is my last week and last column.
Somewhere between the Allegheny River and the Reilly Center, a salty charcoal scent rolls down the hill overlooking Fred Handler Park. On that hill, some 400 college students congregate, forming a human sea from behind the middle of the home dugout all the way to behind the home bullpen in left field.
The men's golf team returned from Florida last weekend bringing home a sixth-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships. At the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla., the Bonnies spent the first two days of the tournament in fourth place but fell to sixth after faltering in the final round.
Senior centerfielder Katie Pazda took batting practice with coach Mike Threehouse on the Bonnies' day off. Pazda called Threehouse in to Butler Gym to help her improve her swing. "Even to the last minute, she's doing what she did as a freshman," Threehouse said.
The men's golf team travels to Jamestown, N.Y. to compete in the Little 3 Championship against Canisius and Niagara on Monday at Brierwood Country Club. The Bonnies have won the last five Little 3 championships. Junior Chris Stoddard, a Jamestown native, will play on his home course.
The men's basketball team addressed the need for depth at the point guard position, when it announced April 23 that junior college point guard Ogo Adegboye signed a National Letter of Intent to attend St. Bonaventure. Adegboye, who was born in Nigeria and raised in London comes to the Bonnies from Lamar Community College in Colorado.
