Commencement speaker Deb Henretta, '83, is a strong leader in the business world, an area of the workforce traditionally dominated by men. The university should be commended fot bringing a Bonaventure alumna who provides the university's women with a model of quality leadership and responsibility as a top female executive in the global economy.It's important for young women to see a successful female president of a company, especially while men in high-paying jobs still earn more than women. Women earn about 75 percent of what men with the same job titles earned, according to an April 20 CNN article.
Sexism hovers over our society like the volcanic ash cloud currently hovering over Europe. We hope sexism will dissipate with the winds of time, but while it clogs the economic skies, it continues to prevent women from ascending to the heights their male colleagues have reached.
The university will host "National Girls and Women in Sports Day" for around 400 students and coaches from New York's Southern Tier on April 30. By providing free clinics and speakers to young women interested in pursuing athletics, the university helps to establish a balance between men and women in the sporting world.
The university's step toward lauding the abilities of women gives female members of the community a strong foundation for their potential future success.
